This isn't a photograph from space. It was automatically generated by either xearth, or, more likely, xplanet. That's a software program where you input images (one day earth map, one night earth map, optional: current cloud cover) and it generates a current view according to the position of the sun. I vaguely remember having that as my "desktop background" (it wasn't called that back then) on my Linux machine ca. 2000.
